OSSHE Historical and Cultural Atlas Resource - This Europe Map Archive from the University of Oregon is an excellent resource of clear, colour maps, some of them interactive. Particularly useful for the New Testament student are

The Jewish Diaspora in the First Century C.E. and the Spread of Christianity map, the latter requiring Shockwave.

 

Ancient World Mapping Center - University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

 

Historical Maps of the Middle East  - The Perry-Castañeda Library Map Collection, The University of Texas at Austin.

 

Oriental Institute Map Series -- Site Maps - The Oriental Institute, University of Chicago. Seven maps of the ancient near east (Egypt, Sudan, The Levant, Syria, Turkey, Iraq, and Iran), locating primary archaeological sites, modern cities, and river courses set against a plain background.

 

The Roman Empire  - A "clickable" map of "the Roman Empire at its Greatest Extent" from the 1907 Atlas of Ancient and Classical Geography, adapted for the web by J. Vanderspoel.
